The Home Safety Score

Français

Is the home keeping up with the person living in it?

A free walk-through of the home, calibrated to the person living in it. Two minutes about the person, five minutes room by room. The result shows where the house itself is supporting them, and where it is working against them.

Before you start.* Every person has different requirements; this check reflects general accessibility considerations and is informed by published home safety screening research. It is not itself a validated clinical instrument, it is not a medical or fall risk assessment of any person, and it does not replace a professional in-home assessment or the advice of a health professional such as an occupational therapist.
About this check

The room-by-room items are adapted from the hazard domains of the Home Falls and Accidents Screening Tool (Home FAST, University of Sydney), a published occupational therapy screening instrument. The questions about the person are adapted from the CDC STEADI Stay Independent self-assessment. The calibration follows the person-environment fit principle from Lawton's environmental press model: the same home feature poses different demands at different capability levels. The result is informed by this published research but is not itself a validated instrument, and the score always describes the home, never the person.
