Frequently asked questions

What government grants are available for home renovations in Ontario in 2026?+
Seven programs apply to Ottawa homeowners: the federal Home Accessibility Tax Credit (HATC), Multigenerational Home Renovation Tax Credit (MHRTC), and Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC); the provincial Ontario Renovates, Home and Vehicle Modification Program (HVMP), and Assistive Devices Program (ADP); and the federal Veterans Independence Program (VIP) for veterans. Combined, these can reduce project costs by more than $48,000.
Can I combine multiple grants for one renovation project?+
Yes, most programs are designed to stack. The CRA explicitly permits claiming the same eligible expense under both HATC (line 31285) and METC (lines 33099/33199) on the same tax return. Federal tax credits are not reduced by provincial grants or forgivable loans — you can receive Ontario Renovates funding and still claim the HATC on the remaining eligible expenses. The only restriction is that you cannot receive duplicate funding for the identical item from two grant programs (for example, HVMP and ADP covering the same stair lift). Still at Home identifies every legal stacking combination for each client. See our full stacking guide at /grants/stacking-guide for the complete strategy.
Do I need to apply for grants before starting my renovation?+
For grant programs like Ontario Renovates, HVMP, and VIP — yes. You must be approved in writing before work begins or the application is void. Tax credits like HATC, MHRTC, and METC are claimed on your annual tax return after the work is completed. Still at Home manages the timing and applications so you never miss a deadline.
How does Still at Home help with grant applications?+
We handle the entire process: identifying which programs you qualify for, preparing documentation, submitting applications, coordinating required assessments (like OT evaluations for HVMP), and ensuring your renovation meets program requirements. Grant navigation is included in our managed service at no additional cost.
Who qualifies for the Home Accessibility Tax Credit (HATC)?+
The HATC is available to Canadian residents who are 65 or older by the end of the tax year, or who are eligible for the Disability Tax Credit. Both homeowners and renters can claim it. Eligible expenses include grab bars, walk-in showers, ramps, door widening, and other accessibility modifications.
